Beiping Road business district

Beiping Road business district

The Beiping Road shopping district, located in the North District of Taichung City, is famous for its cuisine, earning it the saying "Eat in Beiping." This contrasts with the clothing stores of the adjacent Tianjin Road shopping district. Because many of the district's names are Chinese cities, it's also sometimes referred to as "living in a foreign land." The Beiping Road shopping district's culinary specialties include soup dumplings, turkey rice, Hong Kong-style roast meats, meatballs, and steamed dumplings.

Goût Bar Okay

Goût Bar | No-menu cocktails x British gentleman style

Goût Bar is a hidden gem of a speakeasy bar located at No. 46, Cunzhong Street, West District, Taichung City. Founded by the chef of the renowned restaurant chain "Le Mu," it's situated in a secret space behind the first-floor restaurant Goût Night. The entrance is behind a bookshelf, creating a scene full of surprises, much like a movie set.

The restaurant's atmosphere blends the elegance of a British gentleman with the refined formality of a Japanese bar, creating a remarkably calm and understated ambiance. Upon entering, guests are greeted with a warm soup and complimentary nuts, offering a comforting and homely experience.

The bar operates without a menu; the bartenders will create customized cocktails based on your flavor preferences, making it perfect for those who want to savor classic cocktails. Cocktail prices are approximately NT$300-400. The space primarily consists of a bar counter and small tables, accommodating groups of 2-4 people only. There are basic charges (such as a seating fee or minimum spend) and a no-outside-food policy, maintaining the high-quality feel of a bar.

Lao Xiang's Shop

Lao Xiang's Shop | Taichung Locals' Late-Night Diner

Hidden in the alleys of Taichung, "Lao Xiang's Shop" is a decades-old snack shop. Without fancy decorations or exaggerated marketing, there is only a simple signboard and steaming hot dishes day after day, accompanying countless locals from their youth to middle age.

Lao Xiang specializes in authentic Taiwanese home-style flavors: braised pork rice, dry noodles, stir-fried vegetables, and his signature sesame oil chicken—each dish embodies the memories and emotions of old Taichung residents. The broth is rich and flavorful, and many customers say it tastes "like grandma's cooking." The restaurant has a warm atmosphere, like a series of old photographs, recording the warmth and hospitality of old Taichung.

Open until late at night, it's the last stop for many workers, night shift workers, and students after work. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a long-time customer, you can always find a comforting bowl of home-style cooking as soon as you step into this shop.

Chiayi eel noodles

Chiayi eel noodles

The authentic Chiayi eel noodles are spicy and slightly sweet, paired with roasted noodles that are incredibly tempting. The owner also serves a pot of bonito soup, leaving you feeling completely satisfied after your meal. The portion of eel is generous, and it has a wonderfully crisp and chewy texture, making it arguably the best eel noodles in Taipei.
